Shir Tikvah Hebrew/Sunday School

We at Shir Tikvah are excited to offer a program for children and families that will be creative, innovative and meaningful. Our goals will include:

  1. Educate and prepare for the bar/bat mitzvah

  2.  Understand and practice Jewish values

  3. Develop a knowledge of basic Jewish literacy.

  4.  Prepare for life as a Jew in the modern world.

“I can’t wait to go to Sunday School; it is so much fun!” I don’t know if the students are saying this, but the teachers sure are. We are having a delightful time this year as we study the Jewish holidays: the history, the customs, the mitzvot, and, of course, the foods. We started off the month studying Rosh Chodesh, using Oreo cookies to represent the phases of the moon and relating these phases to the Jewish calendar. Then it was time to learn about one of the most joyous holidays, Purim. The students made their own groggers and practiced using them as we read the story of Esther. They got to see a real Megillah and were able to recognize some of the Hebrew words. Their project for the mitzvah of giving to the poor is collecting food for Respond Now. You might see their posters around the building. Of course, thanks to Ms. Macey, they had their annual hamentaschen baking experience. They will have a two week spring vacation on March 24 and 31. When they return, they will not only study Passover, but we will also have a speaker from the Anti-Defamation League come out to present a program to them-Words to Action—about anti-semitism. Unfortunately, even at this age, some of them have experienced it.

In Hebrew School, the students are progressing nicely. They participated in a Conservative Shabbat service and are preparing to read some of the Megillah at the Purim program.
